SAAB-SCANIA DRIVEN OUT OF THE WARPLANE BUSINESS

Some 14 years ago, Saab-Scania AB, through its then Datasaab subsidiary, was forced out of the mainframe business because it couldn’t afford the development cost, and now it looks as if it will be driven out of the warplane business for the same reason: the JAS-39 Gripen, intended successor to the superb Viggen that was a thrilling highlight of the Farnborough Air Display for many years, has hit severe cost overruns on development of the aircraft’s 40 separate computer systems, and may now be cancelled.
