San Jose-based S-MOS Systems Inc, an independent partner of Seiko Epson Co, has made a name for itself with its Cardio credit card-sized single board computers, and has now come out with the 80486-based version it was promising 18 months ago. The S-MOS Cardio-486 is a fully-functional AT-alike that is literally the size of a credit card, measuring 3.4 by 2.2 – the thickness wasn’t given, but the 80386SL version is 0.22 thick – and is aimed at embedded applications in factory automation, point-of-sale systems, test and measurement equipment, set-top boxes, global positioning systems and any other intelligence devices. Cardio-486 consists of an Intel Corp 80486SL Super Chip-set in cluding 8Kb of cache and floating point unit. It has 4Mb or 8Mb memory, AT BIOS ROM, input-output con troller with two serial ports, a parallel port and speaker port. It includes a built-in floppy disk con troller and port, an IDE port and an AT bus inter face. All the input-output ports are present via sin gle, 236-pin connector int erface – the All-In-One- System-Interface. It comes with 25MHz or 33MHz clock and at 3.3V, the 25MHz ver sion with 4Mb draws a maxi mum of 890mA. The 33MHz 8Mb version draws 1,130mA. Pricing is less than $800 in quantities of 1,000 for the 4Mb 25MHz version. S- MOS says 12Mb and 16Mb ver sions follow next quarter.
