Russian computers were stuck in a mid-1970s System/370-type time-warp, and today’s 80486 machines are faster than late 1970s mainframes such as the 370/148: Informix Software Inc reports that the Central Bank of the Russian Federation has gone for Informix database technology as its standard database for a five-year, multi-million dollar downsizing project, replacing a wide range of proprietary systems, and will run the gamut of Informix software on machines from Sun Microsystems Inc, AT&T Corp’s Global Information Solutions, and iAPX-86 personal computers; the pact is one of the largest ever for information technology in the former Soviet Union.
