Cable & Wireless Plc has been invited by Intertelecom A/O, Russia’s principal telecommunications carrier, to establish a 50-50 joint stock company, to be called Metropolitan Communications. As a first stage, Metropolitan will survey existing telecommunications facilities and look at the feasibility for upgrading and extending the facilites within target areas. The survey is expected to be completed by the year end, when decisions will be taken regarding the development of the telecommunications infrastructure. It is envisaged that eventually Metropolitan will modernise, develop and operate long distance and international telecommunications within the Tyumen Oblast, Russia’s major oil field, the Golden Ring of major towns surrounding Moscow and facilities in Moscow and St Petersburg.
