Russia’s Industry and Trade Ministry has announced plans to replace American chips installed in government computers with domestically developed chips.
The Russian government is investing millions of dollars in a home-grown chip project, Baikal, to develop a chip-based on British semiconductor manufacturer ARM Holding’s ARM Cortex A57 Architecture with 64-bit support.
Baikal micro processors will be designed by a unit of supercomputer maker T-Platforms in 2015 with support from Russian defence company Rostec and funded by Rosnano.
The first chip to be developed will be Baikal M and M/S with a speed of 2 Ghz, which will be designed for PCs and micro servers while Linux will be OS of choice.
The Baikal project also plans to develop a more powerful version of chip with 16 cores by 2016 to install them on computers of government agencies and state owned companies.
