The Belgian state-owned Regie des Telegraphes et Telephones phone company is pushing ahead with its Groupe Speciale Mobile-based digital cellular network, and has chosen Alcatel Bell and a Philips Electronics NV-Siemens AG joint venture to install the next set of infrastructure: the RTT did not give an indication of the size of the contract, which calls for a further 500 base stations to be installed between now and 1994 although it is understood the phone company, which is proud of being among the first to adopt the pan-European digital standard – is hurrying the companies to cover much of the country by the end of the year; Belgium already has 110 of the digital stations installed.
