Five part-time keyboard operators who fed check details into a computer at the Midland Bank processing center in Frimley, UK are claiming compensation for repetitive strain injury. The test case, brought by the banking workers union Bifu, could open the door for a flood of claims from other workers, reports the Guardian. RSI will be the industrial disease of the 21st century if employers ignore the well-being of staff, said Linda Gregory of Bifu. Hopefully, advances in character recognition and speech recognition technologies will remove the need for people to key in information though, alas, it will do little to contribute to membership of Bifu.
