A McDonald’s branch in London is the first retailer to adopt the technology to accept the new cards. Royal Bank of Scotland is planning to extend the new payment technology to various other retailers in London and on the south bank of the Thames.

Iain Clink, managing director of cards and direct finance at Royal Bank, said: Having been the first in Europe to trial contact-less cards means we know that everyone wins with this new way to pay. People love the convenience and speed of the card as well as the freedom from worrying about whether they have enough change. Retailers like contact-less cards too because they make paying faster.
