Royal Tunbridge Wells to boost trade in town centre with wifi by Mill Telecom

TWifi will give public free internet access

By Claire Vanner

A wireless network in Royal Tunbridge Wells town centre, TWifi, is a stage closer as Tunbridge Wells Borough Council has entered into a partnership with MLL Telecom to develop the project.

The TWifi network will give the public free internet access within the designated area for three months following the launch date, and after that registered users will have 15 minutes a day free and the option of a low cost pay-as-you-go service. It will be quick and easy to sign up to the service which also gives users permanent free access to a range of designated websites which will include information on local attractions, shops, events and public services.

The TWifi will be deployed by MLL Telecom at no cost to the borough council and will use existing street furniture, mainly CCTV camera columns, for the equipment needed to provide the service.

Council cabinet member with responsibility for the project, Jane March, said: "This is an exciting project which we think will offer lots of benefits to users and be very helpful for our visitors."

The first phase of the project is expected to be up and running in January with coverage in the wider town centre in a few months later. In the longer term the partnership offers the potential for improved broadband in the rural areas and business centres of the borough.

Dave Pinnington, director of regional networks, MLL Telecom says: "Our aim is to work with local communities to serve their needs, so we’re delighted to be able to work with Tunbridge Wells Borough Council on this initiative.

"Not only will it offer improved connectivity to residents and businesses, but it also opens the doors to visitors to find out more about the region and get online to share their experiences.

"Many studies put free public WiFi at the top of tourist wish lists, so we hope this initiative will help enhance the Tunbridge Wells visitor economy. We look forward to continuing to work with the Council over the coming months to further extend superfast broadband services in the region."
