Route planner tool to help freight operators plan journeys

Allows freight operators to plan routes free of charge.

By Amy-Jo Crowley

New website Freight Journey Planner has been launched in the UK for heavy weight and commercial vehicles, allowing them to plan routes free of charge.

Freight Journey Planner has Navteq restriction data, allowing local authorities to add their own restriction data to the system. Any routes then generated take into account local issues and give local authorities more control over their roads.

PIE Mapping, the company behind the tool, said the tool would help users avoid weight restricted roads and plan accurate routing.

Freddie Talberg, CEO of PIE Mapping, said: "Navigating Britain’s roads continues to get tougher for freight operators, with lots of restrictions governing vehicle movements.

"We’ve been developing the Freight Journey Planner to directly address this issue and are delighted to launch this free service using high quality freight specific data from an array of sources, including directly from councils.

The company said it expects to gather as much local data as possible by partnering with more local authorities.

"We hope this helps operators and drivers to comply with the preferred routes and rules of local authority road networks," added Talberg.
