The Romanian Ministry of the Interior is reported to have ordered an ES/9000 mainframe, terminals, and a variety of peripheral equipment from IBM Corp. According to Newsbytes, the deal is worth several million dollars and is thought to be the first of its kind in the country. The mainframe is due for delivery this summer, and will take around a year to commission. Operating systems for the computer include MVS, CICS, DB2 and surprisingly for a mainframe – OS/2. The government has not yet decided on applications. Newsbytes says the machine will be used to as a basis for a government information system which would involve the computerisation of the currently paper-based national ID card system.
