When Rolm Corp was acquired by IBM for $1,500m in 1985, it was promised that its identity would be maintained, but after the end of the year, it will be left with little apart from its name: in March its 6,000 salespeople were transferred to the parent, and on December 31, Rolm ceases to be a wholly-owned subsidiary and becomes merely the Rolm Systems Division of IBM Corp.
