Rockwell International Inc, El Segundo, California has announced what is claimed to be the first single-chip facsimile modem to offer digital speech compression: the new device is said to store up to 12 minutes of spoken messages. Called the RFX96V12 Monofax, it is said to offer full 9,600bps Group III fax functionality, built-in Caller ID and voice memory error correction. The company is also offering the chip bundled with an Integrated Fax Controller, which it says includes all the control circuitry for the printer, scanner, keyboard and modem interface. This configuration is to be marketed as one of its Advanced FaxEngine family of integrated modems. The chip is to cost $35 in quantities of 10,000-up, while bundled with the facsimile controller it is priced at $44.50 for the same volume.
