The Erika office equipment end of VEB Kombinat Robotron, which became Robotron Bromaschinenwerk some years ago, is changing its name to Smtron GmbH and is relying on holding on to business in the Soviet Union while it strives to become competitive on the world stage. It has struck a deal with NCR Corp for assembly of 20,000 electronic cash registers, mainly for Eastern Europe, and has agreement with Aquarius Inc of Taiwan for the supply of personal computers. According to the Financial Times, Smtron is hoping to ship 100,000 personal computers to Aquarius this year.
