SoftBank’s humanoid robot Pepper sold out in a minute as it went on sale Saturday.
The robot, which is capable of understanding and reacting to human emotions’ hit the Japanese market on Saturday and the entire 1,000 stock lasted just a minute as people rushed to buy it.
The company which manufactured it will no longer be taking any orders for June, but plans for additional sales of the robot, which was designed by Aldebaran Robotics, will be announced in July.
It retailed at 190,000 Yen, (£1,000) and is considered to be useful for household tasks and support for the elderly, however, how people actually put it to use is yet to be seen.
The 121-centimetre tall robot is capable of carrying out basic conversations as well as reading facial expressions and body language.
The impressive first sales will likely boost the drive to sell it around the world, partners Alibaba and Foxconn are both on board to bring it to the global market.
