Web application server pioneer SilverStream Software Inc is poised for a rite of passage. Today, Monday May 10, is the day SilverStream’s first user conference kicks off in Orlando, Florida. Executives warned that no new products would be announced, but suggested that a product roadmap will cover the company’s support for extensible markup language (XML) and its increasingly warm relationship with IBM Corp.

Of great interest to SilverStream’s customers – and to its competitors – is the news that users will no longer have to use SilverStream’s tools to develop for SilverStream’s server. Competitors like HP and WebLogic had better come up with another way to differentiate tool-agnostic web application servers of their own.
