British Telecommunications Plc and AT&T Corp may be bitter rivals in many areas, but they are to collaborate on a new London-based electronic mail, document transfer and information service dubbed LondonLink. The service, which is to be subscription-based when it goes live this month, is a joint project between the London region of the Confederation of British Industry, the London Pride Partnership and the London Research Centre. The strange pairing of British Telecom and AT&T has come about because LondonLink appointed both as Primary Suppliers, out of a choice of eight proposals. Neither company will receive any contract fee for their work, according to the Financial Times, but will instead receive fees based on usage of the service. Other technology suppliers for the service are ICL Plc, Mercury Communications Ltd, Microsoft Corp, Novell Inc, Psion Plc, Racal Network Services Ltd and Unisys Corp.
