Perversely, the three leading RISC workstation vendors have all chosen the same day – today – to inflict the most agressive iterations of their product lines on the world. Everyone still agrees that Sun Microsystems Inc and Hewlett-Packard Co are numbers one and two in the market, but some observers reckon that IBM Corp has now overtaken DEC and is now number three DEC can easily put the record straight by saying whether its Unix system sales this year will exceed $2,250m, the figure that IBM is pitching for. Characteristically, IBM is not joining today’s party, equally characteristically, DEC is emphasising OpenVMS over Unix. Let battle commence.
