The companies announced that RIM would use the Intel PXA9xx cellular processor, codenamed Hermon, for its upcoming BlackBerry devices that will run on high-speed EDGE (enhanced data rates for global evolution) networks.

Also, Intel and RIM would work together on new wireless technologies and handset features going forward, the companies said.

Our collaboration with Intel has enabled us to make a fundamental architectural shift that maximizes the benefits of EDGE-based mobile networks, said Mike Lazaridis, RIM co-CEO, in a statement.

Rumors that the two companies were working together first surfaced in July. RIM reportedly declined to comment on its existing silicon provider for high-end BlackBerry devices. Previously, the company had used Intel 386 chips in some of its earlier BlackBerry devices.
