RIM to launch 4G tablet in March

Sprint Nextel chosen as the network carrier for the tablet

By CBR Staff Writer

BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) will launch a 4G tablet device with wireless communication network Sprint Nextel as its carrier in March.

While unveiling its seven-inch touchscreen tablet PlayBook at a demo session, the company said the tablet device is garnering massive attention from corporate companies, Reuters reported.

RIM senior vice-president of enterprise and platform marketing Jeff McDowell was quoted by the news agency as saying that large companies are talking deployment in the tens of thousands, right off the bat.

"Corporations are treating PlayBook as a tool as essential to employees as a phone or a PC," McDowell said.

The PlayBook, which weighs less than 400gm and is less than 10-mm thick, comprises a fast dual-core processor.

Media reports said that the iPad rival performed smoothly, including playing online Flash videos quickly, during the demo session.

Its software features a rotating carousel that displays all the programmes that the device is running.

The tablet computer’s battery will outlast other seven-inch tablets, McDowell added, while dismissing concerns about Flash programmes draining battery life as "absurd generalisations".

He said RIM chose Sprint as it has the widest 4G network currently.
