Simi Valley, California-based Rexon Inc has launched ProServe CX, a server-based data storage management product for local networks running Novell Inc NetWare v3.1 and 4.X as part of the subsidiary’s new expansion into the local network and NetWare back-up market. Research has shown that the number of servers on a network has not increased in proportion to the number of clients it supports, with more data being stored on the workstation than on the server thus making central back up control more important than in the past. The Dynamic Load Balancing feature of the new product enables back-up and restore of an unlimited number of client workstations or servers with the concurent transfer of data from up to eight remote clients at one time to a single tape drive on the server, at a speed close to 50Mb per minute. Data is automatically transferred and routed while maintaining maximum throughput performance and two tape drives gives back up for 16 clients concurrently. The firm says that the network back-up time can be reduced by up to 50% using ProServe. Concurrent Transfer technology and distributed processing via FileFlow – which maintains the highest transfer speed on the network depending on the kind of computer so that each client decides what information requires back-up and communicates with the central server to share the workload. ProServe users are not tied to the Novell Inc user licence to make the product a more flexible option for the low-end user. Towards the end of this year Rexon plans to launch a separate data management product targeted at the high end market and positioned above Cheyenne Software Inc’s ARCserve product offering. The ProServe CX is available in two configurations: as a fully integrated data storage and back up offering with high speed tape drives under Rexon’s Techmar name and from Sytron as a stand-alone software package. It lists at $600 for up to 10 users and $1,900 for an unlimited number.
