The name has already met with derision in most corners of the media but Nintendo remained unmoved, insisting that the name indicates that this is a console for everybody, not just hardcore gamers.

The company also noted that this was a universal name, not dependent on the language the customer speaks or the culture they come from.

There is also speculation that the name is meant to symbolize the unique controllers of the console, which are one handed and fitted with motion detectors. If this is the case it could prove a clever marketing ploy by the Japanese company, given that the controllers are likely to be the console’s biggest selling point.

Nintendo designed them in the hope that their similarity to remote controls would attract an audience beyond the traditional gaming crowd. Furthermore their unique ability to control games by simply being waved about could prove attractive to those put off by the multi-button complexity of most consoles.
