Reuters Holdings Plc is holding talks with STC Ltd and Thames Water Plc about the possibility of forming a metropolitan area network to transmit its financial information to the City of London; at the moment Reuters uses British Telecom and Mercury Communications networks to deliver financial information, so if established, the network would remove business from the two public operators, the network could also be used for telecommunications; Reuters says that although it is exploring the possibility no decisions have been taken yet, but it is believed that the network would involve fibre optic cable along Thames’ sewer pipelines, and STC would provide communications skill.
