Retevision, which is set to be the main competitor to Spain’s Telefonica de Espana, says it will start taking customer orders from January 16 ready to start operations from January 23, according to El Pais. After signing a contract clients will be able to connect to the second fixed-line operator in Spain using the prefix 015. Retevision plans to undercut Telefonica, saying that a one minute phone call between Madrid and Barcelona will be 17% cheaper. As a launch incentive Retevision will offer for free the connection charge during 1998, which would be 5,000 ptas and the 100 ptas a month rental. The government still controls 30% of Retevision but there is the commitment to sell this stake at the end of the current year.
