According to a recent report in the Nikkei AI artificial intelligence newsletter, usage of expert systems in Japan has increased by around 30% in the past year, with 332 different systems in use, up from 250 last year: the survey polled 160 companies running or developing expert systems, and showed the most growth in the financial sector in securities dealing and insurance broking; the systems are increasingly being run on workstations, with the proportion rising to 20% of the total from 15% a year ago, at the expense of systems running on mainframes and minis; biggest complaints were that many expert system building tools are riddled with bugs, and the user interfaces are inadequate.
