The emerging multimedia storage medium, Digital Video Disk, will struggle in the video and music industries but will be a major success for the personal computer industry according to a new report from market analysts Forrester Research. Forrester predicts an installed base of 53 million DVD-equipped personal computers by 2002, but over the same period expects only 5.2% of US households to own a DVD-Video player, whilst only 2% will have a DVD-Audio player. The report maintains DVD will replace VHS tape, CDs and CD-ROM in the long-term but will be a flop in the video market for the first three to five years, with the high price tag and lack of available titles the major factors. Forrester says, as a result, DVD devices will help push PCs as an alternative consumer entertainment medium.
