Relational Technology Ltd has a new gateway for the Ingres 6 relational database to DEC’s VAX/Rdb/VMS which provides access via SQL to stored data and enables Ingres applications to access both Ingres and relational databases: Ingres/Gateway analyses SQL requests and modifies them to ensure compatibility with VAX SQL, and the results are sent through Ingres Global Communications Architecture and returned to the user interface; Ingres/Star can also be used in a distributed environment with the gateway, and will allow Rdb data to be accessed and used alongside Ingres data residing on alien machines, or other databases supported by Ingres gateways; DEC is planning to use Ingres technology as the basis for its planned database management system for its Ultrix Unix operating system after buying rights to use it from Relational Technology (CI No 1,193).
