Register.com Inc, the domain name registrar, registered its one- millionth domain name on August 31 when granny-t-be.com went through its registration process. It started registering names in January 1998. However, it should be noted that that vast majority of those were registered while it was a reseller for Network Solutions Inc, which had the monopoly in the market until June 6 this year.
New York-based Register.com was the first company to get the share registration system working which enables it to register names in.com, .net and .org directly and pay NSI $18 each time it does it, instead of $70 as a reseller. The company would only say that more than half of the one million came before June 6. To put it in some sort of perspective, NSI registered 1.2 million names in the second quarter alone, but took four years to get its first million from its start in the business in 1993. á
