Red Hat hands GFS to the Fedora community

Linux distributor Red Hat Inc has handed the development of its Global File System to the Fedora community project.

By CBR Staff Writer

The Raleigh, North Carolina-based Linux distributor acquired the GFS cluster file system along with Sistina Systems in 2003, and began selling the software in July 2004. The OpenGFS Project open source variant has also made the software available and made its own modifications to the GFS code.

By giving GFS to the Fedora project, Red Hat will bring the Fedora community of developers to the technology in the hope of driving innovation. The company also tried to put a positive spin on delays in setting up the non-profit Fedora Foundation.

Plans for the Foundation were announced in June, but the Foundation still does not exist as an official entity. Red Hat maintained that it is making good progress. It said bylaws leading to the incorporation of the Foundation have been drafted and initial board members are being selected.
