The Evolution Connector for Microsoft Exchange enables Waltham, Massachusetts-based Novell’s Evolution collaboration software for Linux and Unix to connect to Microsoft’s Exchange Messaging server.
The technology was previously proprietary but was released under the open source GPL license in May, enabling it to be included in other Linux distributions and open source projects.
It has now been included in Raleigh, North Carolina-based Red Hat’s beta version of Enterprise Linux 3 Update 3, better enabling the operating system to communicate with Evolution and Exchange in mixed environments.
Other new developments include preliminary support for IBM Corp’s new Power5 processor-based Squadron eServer i5 and p5 servers, additional 32-bit runtime support for 64-bit platforms, and an update of the IA-32 Execution Layer, which allows the emulation of 32-bit x86 libraries on 64-bit Intel Corp Itanium 2 systems.
There are also key security enhancements to protect against stack, buffer and function point overflows, as well as the inclusion of support for the NX (No eXecute) security technology that prevents the execution of malicious code and protects against buffer overflow attacks.
In June, Red Hat released a patch for the Linux kernel supporting NX on Advanced Micro Devices Inc’s and Intel’s 64-bit processors. In Enterprise Linux 3 Update 3 it has now added support of NX in 32-bit x86 architectures.
The beta testing period for Enterprise Linux 3 Update 3 is scheduled to last until August 17, with general availability slated for September 30.
