The Raleigh, North Carolina-based company has hired Karen Tegan-Padir to the newly created position, which will see her managing the strategy for desktop infrastructure technologies within Red Hat, including the recently acquired Netscape security technologies.

The Netscape Directory Server and Certificate Management System may be server-side products but are seen as important technologies within the company as it begins to build out its open source architecture with technologies to manage and support desktop deployments.

Netscape Directory Server is an LDAP server that centralizes application settings, user profiles, group data, policies, and access control information into a network-based registry, while Netscape Certificate Management System is a security framework to guarantee the identity of users and ensure privacy of communications.

Tegan-Padir was previously the vice president of engineering for Java2 Enterprise Edition platforms and Application Server products at Sun Microsystems Inc, and before that was at fault tolerant server vendor Stratus Technologies Inc.
