The product is the latest delivery in Raleigh, North Carolina-based Red Hat’s strategy to build an Open Source Architecture on top of its Enterprise Linux distribution. This is being created both via third-party partner applications and through the expansion of the Red Hat Applications suite.
That suite already includes Portal Server, Content Management System, Cluster Suite and Developer Suite. Red Hat Application Server 1.0 will be added to that list in 2004 once it has been through the public beta testing process.
Beta 1 of the product is available now for download and is designed for use with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 running on multiple processor platforms, including those based on Intel Corp-compatible x86 processors, Intel’s IA-64 Itanium, Advanced Micro Devices Inc’s x86-64 Opteron, and IBM Corp’s PowerPC-based iSeries and pSeries servers.
Red Hat Application Server includes technologies from multiple open source application server and Java server projects, such as version 4.1.27 of the Tomcat Java Servlet 2.3 and JavaServer Pages 1.2 technologies, and the ObjectWeb consortium’s JOnAS 3.3 J2EE implementation.
It also includes Struts 1.0.2, a framework for building web applications with Java, from the Apache Jakarta project. Also included are sample JOnAS and Struts web applications, as well as supporting modules for file upload, the AJP and WARP protocols, and JDBC drivers for the MySQL open source database.
As the PostgreSQL open source database is recommended for use with JOnAS in the beta release, this is also available for download from Red Hat.
