Red Hat: Enterprises plan for IoT adoption within 5 years

73 percent believe mobile plays a role in their business.


The majority of organisations believe the Internet of Things (IoT) will impact their business, according to research.

A survey from Red Hat showed that 21 percent of organisations have incorporated IoT projects into their business, while 28 percent plan to in the next year. Additionally, 70 percent plan to do so over the next five years.

Although 73 percent of organisations believe mobile plays a role in their business, security and back-end integration were seen as the main challenges for 45 percent and 43 percent respectively.

Other challenges included user interface and user experience design, cited by 35 percent, and collaboration and cost cited by 34 percent and 24 percent respectively.

55 percent of respondents that develop apps use external sources such as libraries, marketplaces and vendor services to integrate mobile apps into back-end systems.

Only 30 percent use mobile application platforms and mobile backend as a service solutions, while 20 percent use API management and 20 percent use existing middleware or APIs from their back-end software vendors.

However, while mobile and IoT are rising up the agenda, 60 percent of respondents prioritise maintenance of core systems when allocating IT resources for the year ahead.

Cathal McGloin, vice president, Mobile Platforms, Red Hat, commented: "As organisations shift to become more mobile-centric, back-end integration is where many are hitting a wall — the back-end presents myriad challenges, while other challenges such as security continue to be a concern.

"In order to solve these mobile issues, organisations should look to maximise efficiency by leveraging mobile platforms to accelerate development while reducing complexity."

TechValidate carried out the online survey for Red Hat in March and April 2015, polling 112 global Red Hat customers. These varied in size from Fortune 500 companies to small businesses.
