Releasing an example of the fake email that claims to sent from detective superintendent Col Dyson on behalf of the central bank in a statement, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has urged customers not to respond to the email or provide any personal information on any website to which they may be directed.
The phishing scam is the latest cause for alarm amid the escalating anxiety created by online fraudulent activity.
The Australian High Tech Crime Centre (AHTCC) and NSW Police Fraud Squad are currently investigating the source of the email.
In addition, AHTCC director Kevin Zuccato said, Computer owners and internet users should always exercise the utmost caution by deleting suspicious or unsolicited emails, never clicking on hyperlinks and ensuring that firewalls, antivirus and intrusion detection software are properly installed and regularly updated.
