RATIONAL, BORLAND CONTRIBUTE TO SHARED FRAMEWORKS

By CBR Staff Writer

Perhaps it’s the abject failure of the company to deliver on any of its big initiatives over the past decade – the grim procession kicks off with Systems Application Architecture and AD/Cycle and features Taligent Inc and Kaleida Labs Inc. Or perhaps it’s the airy-fairy flowers in your hair image conjured up by the name, but very few people seem to take IBM Corp’s San Francisco Java- written Shareable Frameworks object-oriented initiative built on VisualAge and JBA Holdings Plc’s GuideLines very seriously. But the idea is that San Francisco frameworks, such as general ledger, accounts receivable, sales order processing and warehouse management will enable developers to reduce the time and expense of developing and maintaining customised applications, and it does seem to be what object-oriented technology was meant to be all about. It has now won the support of two of the more serious players in the game, Rational Software Corp and Borland International Inc. The San Francisco Project has chose Rational Software’s Rational Rose visual modelling tool to design, engineer and bring its shareable software components to market. As for Borland, it has committed to support the San Francisco Project with its forthcoming Borland JBuilder visual component Java development tool for Java-based cross-system applications development.
