Graphics and digital video specialist Radius Inc has unveiled a new low-cost digital non-linear editing system designed for the desktop. Intended for digital video editors Radius EditDV is also aimed at graphics and video professionals ready to enter the DV space. Along with editing and QuickTime compatibility, Radius EditDV includes a host of features aimed at freeing up editor’s creative flow. These include DraftDV a special rendering mode, which allows editors to produce VHS-quality drafts three to five times faster than fully rendered video; SoftDV, a playback software codec, which allows users to view different levels of resolution and LiveDV which lets editors turn QuickTime movies into full motion over FireWire. The $999 software application lets users combine the latest camcorders, Apple’s Quicktime, Firewire’s connection capability (IEEE 1394 standard) and new CPUs for a total system cost of about $6,000 – $7,000 versus $20,000 and over for traditional systems.
