As well as the Radius System 100 high-end Power Macintosh clone (CI No 2,632), Radius Inc has launched the PowerPC 601 and MIPS R-series RISC-based Splash Power Series colour servers. The new models are claimed to be up to five times faster than the Splash Series, which can be upgraded to the new performance. The PowerPC RISC handles all PostScript processing, networking and Open Pre-press Interface, while the 40MHz MIPS RISC manages copier communication, colour correction, calibration, and pre-press functions. Custom ASICs simulate standard Cyan-Magenta-Yellow-blacK press conditions and Red-Green-Blue displays. The Splash Power Series support the Xerox Corp MajestiK Color Series digital colour laser copier at its full 400dpi resolution in 32-bit CMYK continuous tone colour, the San Jose company says. Incoming jobs are raster image processed on the fly as they are being received. They support Macintosh and Windows workstations and come in three models, which can also be used as fast and powerful graphics workstations. The 100MHz Splash P105PRO, 80MHz P85 and 66MHz P70 include a complete Mac OS workstation with the PowerPC RISC, hard disk, memory, CD-ROM, floppy drive, Ethernet, SCSI, Radius colour display, and Splash NuBus board with large frame buffer, MIPS RISC processor and custom ASICs. They cost $20,500 to $33,500.
