Racal Electronics Plc is an ICL user of very long standing, and its Racal Vodafone spin-out is remaining true to the company with a monster UKP10m – that’s almost $20m at the current rate of exchange – order for two of the new Series 39 SX 550-20 two-node mainframes and over 100Gb of disk. The first system is due to go in next month, the second next April. The purpose of the new machines is to bring together on one system all Racal-Vodafone’s call air-time calculations and customer billing for both its wholesale and retail cellular telephone service marketing activities. It is currently doing one on a smaller ICL box, the other on a Prime mini.
