We highlighted on Thursday the fact that Racal Telecom Plc was well-placed to be one of the biggest winners in the liberalisation of UK telecommunications (CI No 1,627), and right on cue on Friday the company announced that it would be seeking permission for Vodafone to set up its own fixed links to reduce the dependence of its cellular service on British Telecommunications Plc and Mercury Communications Ltd to complete calls; British Rail Telecommunications is also understood to be in final negotiations with foreign telephone companies for a joint venture to exploit its extensive long-distance network.
