Quest Software Inc yesterday introduced Instance Monitor, what it claims is the first real-time monitoring and diagnostic tool for Oracle database management. The tool works by displaying graphical representation of internal Oracle database activity and by doing so helps database administrators to get to pinpoint bottlenecks in the system before they start to cause serious problems.

Quest says its Instance Monitor allows database administrators to view a graphical flow diagram, which illustrates the real-time rate data movement between database components such as storage, memory and database network traffic.

The drill-down capability provides detailed information about database metrics so users can perform analysis and tuning. With an online tuning guide, authored by Quest’s Oracle experts, Instance Monitor provides users with guidelines for tuning and diagnosing Oracle database performance. The software uses calibration technology that automatically learns the behavior of a specific database and sets a baseline for normal activity. Database thresholds can be automatically set and warn users of impending problems before they become critical, optimizing the performance of the database for each configuration.

Since databases are run on different platforms and serve different purposes they cannot be monitored and tuned the same way, said Mike Coffman, director of production support solutions. Existing database monitoring tools require the user to perform the time-consuming task of manually setting database thresholds for each Oracle instance, but this solution does it automatically. Instance Monitor runs on Windows 95/98/NT platforms and requires an SQL Net connection to any Oracle server. It is available now at an introductory price of $1,495.
