Terry Matthews, president and chairman of Newbridge Networks Corp, is the most prominent computer industry figure in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours list, has been awarded the OBE for services to the communications industry. Terry has not always basked in titled splendour, he was once known as the more humble Tel from Mitel Corp, the company he founded with Mike Cowpland – the Mi in Mitel. As usual, GEC Plc came in for official notice with several awards. Michael Jones, technical director, Marconi Dyamics Ltd was awarded an OBE for his services to the Defence Industry as was Walter Wignall, former managing director of Matra Marconi Space (UK) Ltd, for services to the Space Industry. Alaster Drummond, prototype wireman, Marconic Avionics received an MBE for services to the defence industry as did Brian Wright, Business Manager for Marconi Defence Systems Ltd. Dennis Lait, former chairman of Graseby Dynamics Ltd, gets a CBE for services to the defence industry. CBEs also go to Michael Alders, chairman of Motorola Ltd; William Keates, director of personnel for BICC Plc; John McClelland, director of manufactoring and product development, IBM (UK) Ltd for services to industry and education in Scotland, and to David McMurty, chairman and chief executive, Renishaw Plc, for services to science and technology. Both Robert Graham, project manager for the late, lamented Ferranti International Plc and Michael Joby, new projects manager, Lucas Electronics Division, Lucas Industries Plc became Members of the Order of the British Empire. An MBE goes to Thomas Roughley, lately assistant director, data archive at the University of Essex for services to information technology, and James Kemlo, is noticed with the MBE, not only for his work as an assembler at NCR (Manufacturing) Ltd but also for charitable services to the community in Dundee. The only woman to receive a title in the world of information technology is Doreen White, executive assistant to the chairman, British Telecommunications Plc, for her services to the telecommunications industry.
