Quark Inc says its Digital Media System is currently only in the early stages of Alpha testing, and thus won’t make its original deadline for release by the fourth quarter of this year (CI No 3,487). Quark struck a joint marketing and development deal with Sun Microsystems for its server-side products QuarkDMS and QPS Publishing system at the Seybold show in San Francisco this week. QPS currently runs only on Macintosh servers, though it supported Windows front-end systems. QuarkDMS will run on Windows NT in its first iteration, and will be jointly ported to Solaris by Quark and Sun. Quark says one of the factors that helped decide the deal was the ubiquitous presence of Sun servers in the publishing industry for back-end processing. It isn’t prepared to comment on when the Solaris versions will reach the market.
