Milpitas, California-based Quantum Corp has announced a new ATA specification for the integration of devices with Plug-and-Play capabilities, with the aim of improving the interoperability of such devices. The specification, endorsed by Hewlett-Packard Co, covers all ATA interface devices, including hard disk, CD-ROM and tape drives, and is claimed to address all the essential components and architectural layers of the Plug-and-Play feature. Quantum will submit the specification to the appropriate standards committee for review and adoption. The Plug-and-Play ATA specification introduced by Quantum outlines the system level requirements for personal computer manufacturers wanting to feature this ease-of-use capability. Quantum says it is working closely with major system manufacturers and BIOS developers to ensure adoption of the new Plug-and-Play ATA specification. Quantum has also begun licensing the software application Norton Smart Doctor to personal computer manufacturers including Acer Inc, Digital Equipment Corp, Hewlett-Packard Co and NEC Technologies Inc. Introduced earlier this year, the Smart – Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology – System uses internal hard disk monitoring technology, along with a graphical user interface to alert users if an impending device failure is detected. The Norton Smart Doctor application, developed through a strategic partnership between Quantum and Symantec Corp, provides the user interface for desktop personal computers that enables users to take advantage of the Smart System increased data protection and system reliability. Smart System is an industry standard for both SCSI and ATA interfaces and is in the process of being standardised for the DMI Desktop Management Interface, says Quantum. Norton Smart Doctor provides base level functionality that can be added to as Desktop Management complexity progresses. Quantum is promoting Smart System as a rapidly evolving key enabling technology for increased levels of system capabilities, such as automated back-up, client management and network and storage management. Software licences for Norton Smart Doctor are available from Quantum and Symantec. The initial English language release of the software is out now, and it will be followed by localised versions in 11 languages.
