Taiwan notebook computer maker Quanta Computer Inc, the second biggest notebook manufacturer in Taiwan after Acer Inc, has launched a $200m joint venture with the China Development Bank to make digital video disk (DVD) drives on the island. Quanta which produces machines such as AST Research Inc’s Ascentia, Dell Computer Corp’s Latitude and all of Siemens Nixdorf’s notebooks, has reported sales of $1.62bn for last year, up 48% from 1997 and its profit is expected to be the equivalent of $330m. It is predicting sales of around $2.7bn in 2000.
