QUALCOMM PAYS $8m FOR MOTOROLA POSITIONING SERVICE

By CBR Staff Writer

Qualcomm Inc, San Diego is paying $8m for various assets used in Motorola Inc’s CoveragePlus US-wide communications network, and Qualcomm will transfer subscribers over to its own OmniTracs network. The CoveragePlus and OmniTracs systems provide messaging, position reporting and other services for transport companies. Motorola dealers, agents and value-added resellers will immediately discontinue sale of products and systems designed to operate on the CoveragePlus network, and the two companies will work to convert both CoveragePlus and DriverLink/24 users to OmniTracs. Comdata Network Inc, a CoveragePlus distributor, is now expected to become a distributor for the OmniTracs system.
