Qualcomm Inc, already involved in patent disputes over cellular phones with two companies, is now engaged in a court battle with US Philips Corp. The San Diego, California-based company has now filed a complaint at its local court seeking a judicial determination that it does not infringe three of Philips’ patents covering features of Qualcomm products compatible with the Telecommunication Industry Association’s IS-95-A standard. Philips said it was surprised by the suit, as negotiations over cross-licensing were in progress. Qualcomm is facing patent infringement allegations by Motorola Inc (CI No 3,149) and LM Ericsson Telefon AB (CI No 3,066). Separately, Qualcomm has sold its TL2000 dispatch software product to TMW Systems Inc, a developer of software for the trucking industry, on undisclosed terms. Qualcomm bought the software, which runs on IBM AS/400s, from Indianapolis-based McCormick & Associates in 1995 (CI No 2,825). TMW is from Beachwood, Ohio.
