San Diego, California-based Qualcomm Inc has started production of what is claimed to be the first wireless local loop phone based on the Code Division Multiple Access technology which the company pioneered. Called the QCT-1000, and conforming to the US Telecommunications Industry Association’s IS-95A standard, it is, says Qualcomm, the first in a product family that will be targeted at service providers wanting to provide basic telephony service through wireless access. It operates in the 800MHz band and incorporates the company’s 8Kbps and 13Kbps PureVoice vocoders. Qualcomm has already won its first order for the products: India’s Department of Telecommunications has ordered an initial 500 of the phones, which will be used in conjunction with a wireless local loop system it purchased from Qualcomm last year for installation in New Delhi. The system will initially serve 1,000 subscribers.
