Mobile, Alabama-based QMS Inc has begun shipping the QMS 1060 and QMS 1660 print systems, and the CrownNet network interface adaptor. As reported, when QMS announced it was planning these products (CI No 2,455), the company is hoping they will improve its performance in what it believes is an expanding market after a patch that has seen profits and turnover plummet. The black and white QMS 1060 printer delivers 10 pages per minute print speed and standard output resolution of 600 by 600 dots per inch on up to A4 paper stock. A paper cassette and multi-purpose tray provide a standard 650 sheet input capacity. An extra 500 sheet paper cassette can be added increasing the input capacity to 1,150 sheets. The QMS 1060 is priced at $2,700. The colour QMS 1660 print system features a 16 ppm print speed and output resolution of 1200 by 600 dpi on up to 12 by 19 paper stock, including full-bleed 11 by 17 paper sizes. The printer’s standard paper cassette and multi-purpose tray provide up to 350 sheet input capacity. An additional 250 or 500 sheet paper input cassette can be added expanding input capacity to 850 sheets. The QMS 1660 is priced at $4,200. Both systems are available with the QMS CrownNet, a high performance RISC-based network interface adaptor that enables QMS Crown print systems to connect from almost all network environments while simultaneously serving multiple users from those networks. CrownNet also encables control of the network print systems from remote sites and management for all popular network protocols. QMS claims that CrownNet is the only system available that can handle incoming data from a different networks at the same time; it says other multiple interfaces can handle only one network’s data at a time, locking out other incoming information, which then queues within the network, until the data that was first through the port has been processed. Special hopes are being pinned on CrownNet: the company believes the new products fill in many of the perceived gaps in its range.
