Quantum Effect Design Inc, the MIPS fabless semiconductor design house left stranded by an unnamed OEM last year (CI No 3,056), has gone to IBM Corp to produce its high-performance versions of the MIPS processor, aimed at the embedded systems market. IBM will manufacture QED’s RISCMark RM52xx family of processors, as well as the RM7000 and future microprocessor designs, at its contract manufacturing facilities. QED also has an existing manufacturing agreement with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. The first product from IBM is due out in the first quarter next year.
