Passengers travelling with Australia based Qantas Airways and Virgin Australia will be able to use their mobile devices in flight mode, through the entire journey.
The airlines approved the use of electronic gadgets after the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority approval, following similar approval given by US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) back in 2013.
Travelers will only be able to access the media content stored within the devices as using smartphone or tablet in flight mode, however the users will not be allowed to make calls, send texts or access internet.
Previously it was considered unsafe to use electronic devices due to concerns regarding interference with the aircraft signals, but now authorities found that it did not interfere with the signals.
Qantas domestic chief executive officer Lyell Strambi said: "Qantas has conducted rigorous testing to assess the impacts of electronic devices on the safe operation of aircraft."
"We are confident that these devices are safe to be turned on, but in flight mode, for the duration of each flight."
